CRIME AND PUBLIC SAFETY
Public safety that is effective, coordinated, and accountable
-
Police have a role to play in community safety, but community safety is a complex problem which requires a variety of tools to solve. We must ensure that we are responding to calls for help with the appropriate tool for the job, and not being overly reliant on police for everything. This frees police to do actual police work, instead of demanding that they also act as mental health workers. Investing in these programs leads to better outcomes for people in crisis while making more efficient use of public resources.

Victoria taxpayers are unfairly burdened under our current system. By regionalizing our police force, we can reduce costs, eliminate redundancies, and increase coordination for better results for everyone. Criminal activity does not stop at municipal boundaries, and our policing model should reflect that reality.

Speeding and running red lights has become commonplace, making our roads more dangerous for everyone. Traffic violence is a significant danger that Victorians face every day, and traffic enforcement is key to keeping people safe and preventing unnecessary injuries and deaths. Clear and consistent enforcement helps change behaviour and ensures that traffic laws are more than just suggestions.

It’s unacceptable that the lines on the road practically disappear in bad weather. This leads to an increase in crashes and a lack of predictability on the roads. We must start using road paint that can actually be seen in the rain. This is a simple, practical change that would make driving safer without requiring major infrastructure investments.
